Blücher and Bailen

Petri, Chris and Aksu had a game of Blücher with 15 mm Spanish and French armies. The game was a refight of Bailen using the scenario from Honour downloads.     The mini campaign saw the main armies find each other at Bailen, with half of the French coming as reinforcements. On the tabletop the Spanish failed to take advantage of …

Spanish Militia Uniforms in May 1808

This is a list of the uniform colours of Spanish Militia and Provincial Grenadier battalions in May 1808. It is based on a scan of a primary document I found on the website of the Ciudad Real tourist board, and I have translated (imperfectly, I’m sure) the main table here. Most of the battalions are dressed (at least temporarily) in brown …

Spanish lancer conversion

My Spanish 1808 army has many small one-off units. One of these intriguing formations is the lancers that fought at Bailen “Los Garrochistas de Utrera”. Albuera 1811 – the refight

Von Alten’s small KGL contingent was positioned in Albuera itself. Stewart’s 2nd division was in reserve roughly northwest of Albuera as were Cole’s 4th division with Lumley’s cavalry brigade but even further from the town. …

Albuera 1811

On May 13th 1811, while beginning to lay siege to Badajoz, Beresford received news that a French relief force of some 25,000 men, led by Marshal Soult, were on their way from Seville. Beresford marched south with 32,000 British, Portuguese and Spanish troops, and on May 15th reached the small town of Albuera. The forces would clash in a bitter, …
