V. Vaara - Early Imperial Roman

army_rome.JPG (11307 bytes)

Joint Winner of the Best Single element, Joint Winner of Best Camp. Sporting a brand new magnificent camp the Imperial Romans took to the field for the second time. In the previous Mättö Ville finished in the second place, but this time the Romans met fierce opposition, managing to beat last year's champion, but not many others.

EIR is no killer army and everyone knows that. The army struggles to get a result in a game with a time-limit as it has virtually no quick-killing capabilities, and weak cavalry. Making a breakthrough on a flank against a faster army can turn very time consuming, but on the other hand the army is quite tough to break frontally. But actually the only thing that matters is the fact that this is the army of Augustus and Trajan, and the army of the Roman Empire at its peak of power, which of course should be enough for any true Romanophile.

The camp: The ditch was modelled with DAS-modelling clay, making the sections roughly 4cm deep. The palisade was made by pushing bits of steel wire in the clay and after allowing the whole thing to dry overnight I covered it with a layer of dilulithed PVA-glue to fill the gaps between the bits of wire. After that painting & flocking. The bushes I made by first glueing down a big piece of darkgreen turf, and then flocking it with lighter green. The tents a supporting structure made of modelling clay and matches, and over that ordinary cloth, with the ropes made of thin wire.
