A. Anttila - Middle Frankish

army_frank2.JPG (18585 bytes)

This Book 3 army was one of the two hairy barbarian hordes in this competition. It finished second, beating all opponents but the invincible Indian archers. It won the best painted army award and jointly the best painted element with Early Imperial Romans. The player won jointly the Best Sportsman award.

"I chose theMiddle Franks as I wanted something that is very tough and has an interesting mix of dangerous foot troops and fragile mounted forces. I also like armies which I can blame when things do not go my way, therefore anything with regular commanders was out. The Franks were also the painting project which was closest to completion, and it seems that I paint best while under serious deadlines. My plan was to advance aggressively with the warband, while concentrating both mounted commands on one flank, smashing the opposing flank. This worked fairly well."

"Most of the figures were painted over a black undercoat, using a
base colour and highlight, with even lighter touches where needed.
Blacklining was used when needed around belts, hands, etc. On
the shields I used dark or black outlining between main colours,
and two or three colour variations to create a nice shaded effect.
On some figures I experimented with white undercoat and ink
shading, but found that I prefer the black method, as it is more
forgiving. The bases are artist's board. Figures are glued with white glue.
After they are set a mixture of water, white glue and reddish brown
paint is painted onto the bases, which are then dipped into earth-
coloured flock. Rocks and green flock is then glued as patches
onto the bases."
